Overdyed Quilts

How gorgeous is this overdyed quilt from Spartan?  As soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to copy the idea.

I've been holding on to a small child's quilt for a while now that has some staining on it, but the overall pattern and the individual fabric patterns are so sweet!

I thought about cutting it up to make pillows or to frame, but how sweet would it be to overdye this quilt for Margot's nursery? I love the idea of getting to save the quilt and I think hot pink would be SO cute!

I Have This Thing With Floors (the Hex Tile Chapter)

My parents' big remodel is in the home stretch! There are three bathrooms that need tile and that's just about it. But three bathrooms worth of tile is a ton of tile! And we're at that point in the project where my parents are sort of sick of spending money so every dollar spent needs to really count. We used some of the quartzite from their kitchen for the countertops in the bathrooms, so that helped us with the budget, but that limited our tile options too. As we learned picking a backsplash tile, quartzite is gorgeous but is hard to pair up with tile!

Cement tiles are so cool and I would love to get to use them here, but they're not in the budget. I also really loved this teak wood tile, but again, it's on the pricey side. What IS in the budget though is $3.99/sq ft hex tiles. We found a ton at local discount tile stores all around the Valley. Floor and Decor has some really pretty grays and neutrals which would look great with the quartzite. We're just going to pop out and replace tiles of different colors in a repeating pattern on the mesh sheets. The gorgeous and talented Gwen from The Makerista did this in her bathroom and it turned out SO WELL. I think she actually had to place each tile by hand, which sounds really labor intensive, but look at the results! What a beautiful floor!

My parents live in a city called Snowflake, and we've talked about doing something like these snowflake patterns here, but we're still thinking about it. Is that too literal? Part of me sort of loves the idea.

I've found a million different patterns on the #Ihavethisthingwithfloors instagram account and hashtag. I feel like this account was made just for me. I majorly have a thing for good floors (and I bet you do, too). Check these out:

The girls upstairs bathroom is next on my list to tackle, so if all goes well with this tile project in my parents' house, I'd love to do something sweet and girly like one of these:

So many possibilities!! This last one makes my heart get all fluttery.  :)

Gallery Wall of Mirrors

There's a hallway in our house that has the lowest ceiling you could possibly imagine and not a ton of natural light. Actually, there's like, no natural light. It's a dark, squatty hallway. The playroom is at one end, our bedroom is at the other and the guest bathroom and the laundry room are in between. So, you know, it's a high-traffic space and I wanted it to be a little less of an eye sore.

Mirrors are a great way to brighten up any space. It really is like adding a window! In my case, I wanted to add about 10 little windows...

I have a ton of art hanging around in the hall and in the guest bath, so besides the added light factor, mirrors felt like a good way to find balance with the rest of the art on the nearby walls.

I've collected most of these mirrors over the years from thrift stores and flea markets. It's not all that easy to find a good place to hang an individual small-sized mirror, but I love the way they all look hanging together!

And I really like the way the gold tones mix with the silver/nickel and the wood. I've mixed metals all over our house, and this little hallway sort of brings all that together for me.

Remember this pretty mirror from the garden level entry of the brownstone? The square mirror to the left was a more recent find, on sale at Anthropologie.

The Mexican mirror was another more recent find at a cool junk store near here called Turtle's Treasures. Only $5!

The Louis Phillipe style mirror is really old - the glass is foggy and super warped. I love it!

It's always a good idea to hang art at eye level. I hung these as if there was a chalk line at my eye level and then I centered the mirror(s) on that line.

It's sort of a dark day here, so you'll have to trust me when I say the mirrors are really brightening up this hallway! :) I'm so happy I was able to find a place to hang all these little treasure of mine, and that they look all the more special hanging together.

Now I just need to work on finding some new wall sconces! :/

Why Don't You: Hang a Picture Ledge

Now that our house is in a more comfortable place, I'm turning my focus back on to the site (redesign almost done! huzzah!) and to my design business. I've picked up a couple new clients this month that I'm excited about. I flew to New York last week to meet with one of them and to help the other style her home after a big move. One of them has about a million framed family photos - and they are beautiful! So homey and personal. None of them are formal portraits, just sweet candid shots, lovingly blown up and framed. I came home inspired to tackle the monumental task of sorting and organizing and printing our favorite family photos. (still working on getting to that one!) :/
You all know I love a good gallery wall. I think it's a great way to display a collection of art or photos that are different, but work well together. I've been thinking of other ways to display family photos besides the traditional nail-in-wall method (something like my friend Emily's picture rails), and I am finding myself so drawn to picture ledges that look like these below - simple, mostly monochromatic, and really artfully curated.

IKEA sells a simple 4' ledge for only about $15. It would be so easy to make your own version too, with a few pieces of glued and pinned together lengths of wood.

I really love India Hick's family photo ledges in her dining room. I'd love to do something similar in our dining nook. It makes me happy to think about seeing all the faces of people we love and have been inspired by every day, at every meal! And what a great conversation starter for dinner guests!

Have you seen any cool/different ways to display family photos lately?
